The Duval Art Teachers Association will once again raffle “Painterly Palettes” as a means to raise funds for the Leslie Beddard Scholarship.Tickets are $1.00 each or 25 for $20 and can be purchased from any Duval County art teacher or you may call 390-2677 to arrange purchases. 8th Annual Flamingo Fete

This year's event will include a live and silent auction of Original Art, small handmade items, including great Holiday Gift items.

Tickets: $20 individual, $35 per couple (advance sales only). All tickets $20 at the door. Call 390-2677 to order your tickets.

Proceeds from the sale of art items at the Fete are used for the Leslie Beddard Scholarship Fund. This fund provides scholarships for art teachers to attend classes, workshops, conferences, and to fund special projects.

The Duval Art Teachers' Association (DATA) is the local professional organization of both public and private school art educators. The organization is comprised of elementary, middle and senior high teachers as well as those in higher education.

This site has been created for Art teachers to share information about art lessons and DATA events. Select pages from the blue list on the left side of this page. To expand the list click on the triangles to the left of each category. The Calendar shows workshops, meeting dates, and other information. This is updated as events are planned. You can read about what DATA members have been doing and up coming events in the DATA Newsletters that are pdf files attached at the bottom of the Newsletter page.

An Art gallery has been created to view art work by students at the different grade levels and by DATA members.

The Duval Art Teacher Association will once again hold two fund raising events. The Fabulous Flamingo Fete and the "Painterly Palettes" raffle as a means to raise funds for the Leslie Beddard Scholarship. Papier Mache Puppets

SUBJECT: 3D Comprehensive I GRADE LEVEL: 9-12	FLORIDA Standards: National Visual Art Standards:	OBJECTIVE(s): 1. The student will create a Papier Mâché Puppet of an imaginary animal. 2. The student will write a 5-paragraph (minimum) essay that goes with the finished puppet.
MOTIVATION: Students will be shown examples of finished puppets.	VOCABULARY: Papier Mâché	MATERIALS:
1. Students will be shown a teacher made PowerPoint on puppets by various artists (Sheri Lewis, Jim Henson and more). 2. LESSON PLAN – Silhouette Collage GRADE: middle/highschool STANDARDS: 1. Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes a) Students apply media, techniques, and processes with sufficient skill, confidence and sensitivity that their intentions are carried out in their artworks. \ b) Students conceive and create works of visual art that demonstrate an understanding of how the communication of their ideas relates to the media, techniques, and processes they use
2. Using knowledge of structures and functionc) Students create artworks that use organizational principles and functions to solve specific visual arts problems3. Choosing and evaluating a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas
b) Students apply subjects, symbols, and ideas in their artworks and use the skills gained to solve
problems in daily life
c) (Advanced) Students describe the origins of specific images and ideas and explain why they are
of value in their artwork and in the work of others OBJECTIVE (S): For the 2d comp II and AP 2d students to create a silhouette of themselves using light to create a shadow of the face so that when given heavy weight watercolor paper, a variety of magazines, tissue paper, glue, water colors, paint brushes and any other materials necessary will be able to create positive and negative space as well as a well thought out multi-media design that includes at least 3 different mediums. MOTIVATIONAL STRATEGIES: Teacher examples as well as student examples provided. Introduction to Artist who create silhouette and that use multi-media Posters and books referencing artist that do similar work for inspiration Demonstration on how to draw the silhouette onto the paper and some techniques that can be used to add the different types of papers using a water and glue solution. VOCABULARY: Silhouette: an outline of a solid object (as cast by its shadow) a drawing of the outline of an object; filled in with some uniform color Multimedia art: the use of several different media to convey information (text, audio, graphics, animation, video, and interactivity. Multimedia Art now include combinations of digital or computer based media. Different media in a multimedia artwork can include paintings, drawings and fragments of everyday objects or video and computer images. Positive space: the space taken up by objects. Negative space: is the space around and between the subject(s) of an image. MATERIALS: (Supplies) · Watercolor paper · Watercolor paints · Paint brushes · Glue · Scissors · Tissue paper · Colored pencils · Magazines · Found objects · Pencils · Tape · Clamp light · Rubric PROCEDURES: The students will first be assigned a partner in the class. Then the two of them will set up a clamp light on a flat surface like the back of a door. One students will stand in front of the paper and pose the way they want their shadow to appear on the paper. The other student will stand and move the light until the shadow casts on the paper in focus and the correct size to fit the paper. Then that student will trace the shadow cast by the other students face onto the paper creating a perfect silhouette drawing. After both students have done this and traded drawing the shadow. They will come up with an idea on how they would like to collage the positive space on the paper (the inside of the silhouette). The background or negative space may be painted using the water colors or tissue paper(suggestion). The tissue paper bleeds colors when you use water and glue mixed together to apply it creating an interesting look. The idea for the collage must be approved by the teacher before the student begins. to communicate an idea or concept based on research, environment, personal experience, observation, or imagination.
2. uses tools, media, processes, and techniques proficiently, knowledgeably, and in a safe and responsible manner.
3. knows how the elements of art and the principles of design can be used to solve specific art problems.

(VA.B.1.4) 2. understands that works of art can communicate an idea and elicit a variety of responses through
the use of selected media, techniques, and processes.
4. knows how the elements of art and the principles of design can be used and solves specific visual art problems at a proficient level.

Other subject(s) such as math or language arts: This is a math based lesson that focuses on measurement.

OBJECTIVE (S): For the High School 2d comp 1 student to learn to draw a self portrait using the grid method to enlarge a photo of themselves. So that when given a digital image of themselves in grey scale, a pencil, a ruler, and drawing paper s(he) will be able to enlarge the photograph to a larger scale and use value and shading to complete the self portrait. · Providing students with information on the style of art made famous by Chuck Close.

MOTIVATIONAL STRATEGIES: · Presentation (Power Point) on chuck close and his processes.
Art posters/overhead transparency how to draw the human features and proportion.
Demonstration how to measure out where the facial features are located and how to work with the grid method.

PROCEDURES: Following an introduction to gridded self-portraiture that includes a power point presentation and book examples about contemporary artist, Chuck Close, I take pictures of my students with a digital camera, and print the pictures in grayscale to at least 5 inches by 7 inches. Students draw a 1/2-inch grid over the entire photograph, and then create a 1-inch grid on drawing paper to double the size of the image.
They use numbers and letters along the sides of the gridded photograph, and corresponding numbers and letters along the sides of their paper.
I found the best results if you draw square-to-square to establish the contour line around their head and shoulders, and then use the grids (like coordinates on a map) to "plot" and place their features. It is helpful to use a cover sheet over their photograph to see a "row" of squares or to isolate individual squares. I tell them they're not DRAWING body parts-they're simply drawing lines! Once students establish contour of the portrait--and VERY lightly pencil in the "edges" of shadows and differences in values--they usually erase their grid lines. A kneaded eraser seems to work best for this. I encourage them to leave the numbered/lettered borders, just in case they need to go back and check a reference point.

I encourage them to go from "0-10" on their portraits. HOWEVER, when they're first adding areas of shade and shadow, I tell them to go 2-3 "values" lighter,
initially. While it's pretty easy to make an area darker, it's hard to make it lighter

EVALUATION: The students will be evaluated by a rubric and critique essay that must be written about their finished work.

Elementrary layered painting

Goal(s) (expectations):
· Student will create a painting and gain an understanding of layered painting
techniques to create texture and enhance the illusion of depth in the work.
Strategies:
· Students will look at works of art showing depth. They will discuss what techniques
create more depth in the painting than using flat colors. They will also look at the
different textures of the work.
· Teacher will demonstrate how to use selected paint to create these effects.
· Students will experiment with these techniques as they build their project from the
farthest object to the closest.
· Other techniques begin encouraged are overlapping and natural grouping, placement of objects to show distance and depth.
